USS JOHN C.STENNIS CVN-74 AIRCRAFT CARRIER

The vessel is named after John C. Stennis, a renowned U.S. Senator from Mississippi who served on the Senate Armed Services Committee for decades.
During his tenure on the committee (19691980), Stennis championed numerous transformative initiatives for naval modernization, earning him the
 honorific title "Father of the Modern American Navy." In recognition of his legacy, the Navy exceptionally named this newly constructed carrier after him while he was still living,
placing him among the few Americans to receive such an honor during their lifetime.

The USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74), commonly referred to as the Stennis, is the seventh Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier of the United States Navy.
Launched in 1993 and officially commissioned on December 9, 1995, its home port is in Bremerton, Washington.
The carrier strike group centered around the Stennis remains one of the U.S. Navy's primary overseas operational forces.

The primary mission of the USS Stennis and its embarked Carrier Air Wing 9 (CVW-9) is to sustain combat operations globally.
CVW-9 comprises 8 to 9 squadrons, operating aircraft such as the F/A-18 Hornet fighter, EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft, S-3B Viking
anti-submarine aircraft, E-2C Hawkeye airborne early warning platform, and SH-60 Seahawk helicopter. Equipped to destroy enemy aircraft, warships, submarines,
and land-based targets—as well as conduct long-range aerial mining missions-CVW9 often serves as a key offensive force. Its roles include supporting ground combat,
protecting the carrier strike group and allied vessels,and enforcing maritime or land blockades. During deployments, the Stennis typically operates as the core or flagship
of its strike group, supported by four to six other warships of varying types.

Powered by two nuclear reactors, the Stennis boasts virtually unlimited operational endurance and a maximum speed exceeding 35 knots.
Its four steam catapults and four arresting wires enable rapid aircraft launch and recovery cycles, while its angled landing deck and expansive flight area allow simultaneous aircraft
launch and recovery operations, significantly enhancing combat efficiency. Though nuclear-powered, the carrier carries approximately 3 million gallons of fuel for its aircraft and escort ships,
 alongside substantial weapon and ammunition stores to sustain prolonged overseas missions. The ship also features robust self-maintenance capabilities,
including an aircraft maintenance department for intermediate repairs, a microelectronics repair facility, and multiple shipboard repair divisions.
For self-defense, the Stennis relies not only on CVW-9 and escort ships but also deploys NATO RIM-7 Sea Sparrow short-range surface-to-air missiles,
the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) for missile defense, and the SLQ-32 electronic warfare system.
